About This Production
The Penalty is a family drama Swahili, English and memory play about a legendary footballer, his two estranged sons, and the emotional cost of a lifetime spent chasing greatness. A contemporary Kenyan drama with elements of magical realism and memory theatre. On the night Kasarani Stadium is renamed in honour of legendary footballer Musa “Baba” Muthee, his estranged sons Tom and Johnnie are locked in a battle over how their father should be remembered. Johnnie, an investigative journalist, arrives armed with evidence of a match-fixing scandal that could destroy the national hero’s legacy; Tom, who sacrificed his own life managing his father’s affairs, believes the truth is more complicated. But when Musa’s ghost appears in the locker room beneath the roaring stadium, the brothers are forced to confront the man behind the myth—and the sacrifices, compromises and silences that shaped his life. As a malfunctioning PA system above them threatens to derail the ceremony, the brothers discover that the father they spent their lives condemning may have left them an inheritance far more complicated than money or fame: the very flaws they see in themselves.
