Description
Echoes from the Lake brings to life the classic Luo epic of Nyamgodho Wuod Obare, turning a well-known folk myth into a powerful physical drama about greed, arrogance, and our relationship with nature. The story follows Nyamgodho, a poor fisherman who pulls a supernatural woman, from the waters of Lake Victoria. Along with her comes an incredible fortune—dozens of sacred cattle rising directly out of the lake, sent as a blessing from the Juogi (the lake spirits). Nyamgodho’s sudden rise from poverty to immense wealth is captured through high-energy ensemble movement and the driving rhythms of Ohangla music. But prosperity breeds arrogance. In a fit of drunken pride, Nyamgodho insults the woman, shattering the sacred trust between himself and the spirits. The performance reaches a gripping climax through intense partner acrobatics and aerial work as the woman abandons Nyamgodho, leading her cattle and everything she came with back into the deep Lake. The ensemble moves like the furious, crashing waves of the lake, leaving Nyamgodho alone on the shore, slowly hardening into stone. Accompanied by the haunting strains of the Nyatiti lyre, the production stands as a timeless warning about what happens when we turn our backs on community and the earth.
