Batsumi: A Dirge for the Left Behind

Synopsis

Batsumi: A Dirge for the Left Behind is a contemporary African dance-theatre work exploring collective memory, grief, and survival

Description

Batsumi: A Dirge for the Left Behind is a contemporary African dance-theatre work exploring collective memory, grief, and survival. Rooted in the Southern African indigenous movement, the work reimagines mourning rituals through contemporary choreography. Performed by an ensemble of fifteen dancers, Batsumi centers the body as archive and storyteller, using movement, breath, and voice to transcend language. The production challenges text-based theatre and invites audiences into a shared space of remembrance, resilience, and healing.
